Session Summary

The silver bear cub from Torrain's tower was Kalin, the son Kaneko was accused of murdering. Father and son talked through Kalin's bear form and the silver bear matriarch Kaneko had killed years ago, who turned out to be Kalin's grandmother. The Giant Sea Turtle carried the Scorned Eight back to Gwynneth and gave Ofie the Ancient Turtle's Conch to summon it in dire need. On the shore, the Valentine Family, led by an elderly bearded patriarch with Evelynn Valentine and Cedric at his side, came for Kalin. The family rejected Kaneko's apology and a fight nearly broke out, but Kalin accepted it, which is the only reason the party wasn't wiped out. Kalin will stay with the Valentines until his 18th birthday. The Circle of the First Root welcomed the party back, granted Kaneko Protective Prey in place of Hunter's Mark, and celebrated with them. After sending word to King Ardyn, the party spent eight days travelling back to their ship. Along the way they recovered a lost sheep, healed a gryphon, met ents, killed three owlbears and adopted their cub Winnie the Who, and fed some talking foxes. They sailed north, and on day nine they came across a king's ship escorted by the Shag Dominica.

Recap

The Scorned Eight entered Winterglen Forest seeking redemption for Kaneko. The ancient forest trapped them in a living maze whose animal monuments tested belonging, wisdom, compassion, perspective, and sacrifice. After solving the sequence, they were welcomed by Maeliss Oak-Mother and the Circle of the First Root. Around an emerald fire, the forest revealed Kaneko's past: his training with the Circle of the Moon Claw, his killing of a sacred silver bear, his exile, his marriage to Evelynn Valentine, an unexplained accusation and imprisonment, his escape from the gallows, and the slave ship where he met the party. Maeliss offered him a path toward healing by finding a lost Kalin. The search led through elemental disturbances to the coastal Tower of the Western Tide, where an unnamed Giant Sea Turtle carried the party across after they patiently asked nature for aid. Inside, they passed three trials by feeding and freeing a starving wolf, protecting animals while allowing a forest fire to renew the land, and accepting that starving wolves had to kill a white stag to feed their pups. At the summit, Torrain greeted them beside the cub. He told Kaneko that “blood remembers,” called Ofie “Princess, daughter of Branvar,” and gave her the third fragment of the Map to Lebor Gabala. The session ended when the silver bear transformed into a half-elven teenager who looked strikingly like Kaneko.

AI Summary

Father and Son

At the summit of the Tower of the Western Tide, Kaneko introduced the party to the boy the silver bear cub had become: his son, Kalin. The two talked about whether Kalin was a druid and how he had lived as a bear. Kalin was shaken to learn that his father had killed the great silver bear. Kaneko apologized. He had not understood that the bear was the matriarch of the circle, and the mother of Evelynn Valentine. He said he was open to Kalin knowing the Valentine Family side of his ancestry, knowing full well that the Valentines wanted him dead.

The Turtle's Gift

The same ancient Giant Sea Turtle that had carried the party to the tower brought them back. Before leaving, it gave Ofie the Ancient Turtle's Conch. Blown on open water, it would call the turtle to their aid in dire times. It set no limit on its use but warned them not to abuse it. The turtle was grateful that Ofie was searching for Lebor Gabala, her people's promised land. It left the party and Kalin on the shore of Gwynneth.

The Valentine Family

Eight tall figures dressed in blue approached, led by an older man with a long beard. Evelynn Valentine stood beside him, and Cedric was among the group. Kalin went to join his family.

Kaneko begged forgiveness for running away. The family demanded to know why he had killed their matriarch, a silver bear over 400 years old. When Kaneko said it had been for money, the Valentines turned hostile and a fight seemed about to start. Ofie stepped in to calm things down and urged Kaneko to tell Kalin the truth, and Kalin's full ancestry came out. The family refused Kaneko's apology, but Kalin accepted it. That was the only reason the encounter didn't end in a massacre.

Kalin left with the Valentines, who said he would stay with them until his 18th birthday. The parting lesson was that it is not always right to be the hunter. Sometimes it is better to be the protector.

Return to the First Root

The Circle of the First Root welcomed the party back and admitted they hadn't expected them to succeed. For completing his redemption, Kaneko received Protective Prey to use in place of Hunter's Mark. The party celebrated with the druids. Gunther found a druid to cast Plant Growth on his Acorn of Awakening shrub, which now has the vocabulary of a three-year-old and a decent bite attack.

Before setting out for their ship, the party sent one of Kormak's owls to King Ardyn:

Thank you for your guidance. We are leaving the land after confronting a party member's family, with a peaceful outcome involving the Valentine Family and the Circle of the First Root. We are heading to kill the next hag in our path, Ursula.
