Session 44.png

Session Summary

After the Shag Dominica battle, the Scorned Eight met Morthac, a metallic dragonborn and follower of Bahamut. He had been hired to escort Brother Garrick, a cleric of the Tempest, to Waterdeep, but they were captured and Garrick died in the fight. The party found a Tempest chain symbol on one of the enemies, looted the ship (a Cloak of Iuz for Thorin, a spellcasting orb for Lois, gloves for Ofie, a bronze ring for Kormak), and held funeral rites for the dead at sea. On the third day a ship swapped its kingdom flag for a black one, sized the party up, and backed off once they raised their pirate flag. They left a lone floating woman behind after Obold sensed evil in her. In a fog bank that night, the Tempest lectured Thorin in a dream for accidentally killing the captives, Garrick among them, and he woke wearing Garrick's Amulet. Later a red dragon, hunting for "something larger than a human, maybe a ram," landed on the bow. The party fed it goodberries instead of Ramses, and it promised to meet them again once they were worthy opponents. Two days later, Kaneko spotted The Drunken Mermaid, a three-story floating tavern and gambling hall owned by Bigsby Barrelbottom, where the champion is a Goliath called The Tidebreaker. The party beat a pair of twins there.

Recap

Sailing north, the Scorned Eight closed on a ship flying a general flag of Faerûn with Shag Dominica shark riders swimming beside it. It was unclear whether the riders were escorting the ship or herding it. At 60 yards the ship fired two harpoon ballistas into the party's vessel, with explosions and ropes attached, and the shark riders charged. Thorin cast Water Walk and whipped up a vortex to drag the enemy ship in until a seidr witch dispelled it. Then he parted the sea and dropped the enemy a hundred feet down. Obold and Ramses rushed the ship and descended the falling water to shoot at the enemies below. Kormak wrestled a shark before leaping aboard to demolish a Shag Dominica. Gunther took a nasty shark bite. Kaneko sniped from the crow's nest and Lois floated overhead casting Eldritch Blast. The notes end mid-battle, right after naming Dame Valeska Draeg, Obold's cousin. Her part in the encounter wasn't recorded.

Aftermath

With the Shag Dominica defeated, the party met Morthac, a metallic dragonborn. He had been paid to escort Brother Garrick, a cleric of the Tempest, to Waterdeep when the Shag Dominica captured them. Garrick didn't survive the fight. When Obold asked who he followed, Morthac named Bahamut. With no one left to escort, Morthac joined the party.

The party found a Tempest chain symbol on one of the enemies, likely stolen from captives who had passed through the ship. They looted the vessel:

They brought the bodies aboard so the dead could have proper funeral rites. The next day a merchant ship passed without incident, and at noon they held the funeral and committed the dead to the sea.

Strange Waters

Thorin's Dream

That night the ship passed through a fog bank, and Thorin dreamed. The Tempest lectured him for accidentally killing the captives on the enemy ship, above all Brother Garrick. Before Garrick's body was given to the sea, the party had placed his amulet on Thorin. When Thorin woke, he was wearing Garrick's Amulet.

The Red Dragon

The next day a roar echoed across the water. A great winged beast wheeled overhead and breathed fire into the sky. It was a red dragon, and it wasn't attacking. Yet.

Morthac asked whether they had strayed into its territory. The dragon glided past and replied, "Ohhh, there you are, dragonborn... No, you have not entered my territory. I am hunting." When asked what for, it said something larger than a human, maybe a sheep or a ram. The party immediately considered offering up Ramses, while Obold slept below decks with him, unaware.

Ofie offered goodberries instead. The dragon landed on the bow, asked where they were headed and whether they had gold, ate the goodberries, and said they might meet again once they were worthy opponents. Then it flew off.

The Drunken Mermaid

Another merchant ship passed, and the next day was quiet. The day after, Kaneko spotted what looked like several ships, then what looked like a building. Through the spyglass, Alias made out a three-story building floating on the open sea with a harbor around it. A large sign on its side read The Drunken Mermaid.

They docked, and Alias paid four dock boys a gold each to watch the ship. Ramses stood guard alongside Kormak's birds. Inside, the first floor was a basement closed to guests, the second a bar, and the third a gambling hall. The owner, a short man named Bigsby Barrelbottom, was the best bartender the party had ever seen. The house champion was a pale Goliath called The Tidebreaker. The party beat a pair of twins, a brother and sister, before the notes end.
